Since 2007, when the first iPhone was released, smartphones have become an increasingly more integral part of our lives. They are our primary source of communication and information and we rely on these devices and related apps on our phones for just about everything. Apps can also help us manage disabilities and medical conditions like Multiple Sclerosis.
The New York Post reports that Americans check their phones an average of 80 times per day, or about every 12 seconds.
Our phones and tablets have replaced key functions of so many other objects and devices that we’ve used for decades, including clocks and alarms, computers, radios, flashlights, cameras and even photo albums. Plus, add an accessory and our phones can transform into projectors, credit card readers or microscopes. It’s all pretty amazing.
If we’re on our devices, chances are we’re using some sort of app. Apps cover every topic or utility under the sun and can help us keep track of our finances and grocery lists, inspire creativity, track our vitals and activity, provide directions and so much more.
Friends in the Cure Nation who are living with Multiple Sclerosis, we put together a list of 5 phone apps just for you! These apps offer a variety of features and functions, and best of all – they’re all FREE!
Momentum Magazine (MS Society)
Momentum, the flagship magazine of the National MS Society, is the largest MS-related publication in the world. The quarterly magazine includes stories by and about people living with MS, expert opinion from MS specialists, and reports on current events, MS advocacy and advances in MS research.
Readers can download the app on Apple and Android for great information and digital editions of the magazine.
My MS Manager
The new and improved My MS Manager™, is a free mobile phone application created by the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA) in partnership with Point of Care for individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and/or their care partner. With this handy app, users can keep track of their MS symptoms, create reports for medical professionals, get reminders for medication, stay up-to-date with MS-related news and information. You can even locate your nearest emergency room!
This app is available for download on Apple and Android.
Multiple Sclerosis Dx & Mgmt.
The Multiple Sclerosis – Clinical Care App contains current information on the diagnosis, classification, and management of multiple sclerosis (MS), concisely presented for use at the point of care. The content has been developed by Borm Bruckmeier Publishing in collaboration with the National MS Society, and is intended for practicing neurologists, resident physicians and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with multiple sclerosis.
Although this app was developed for clinicians, it’s also useful for MS patients and includes information and resources related to the National MS Society. Find it for Apple or Android.
MS Self
If you have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, you understand the ways it may change your life. Staying informed and taking action is important in managing MS symptoms, coordinating with your healthcare team, and living with MS. In the MS self – Multiple Sclerosis Mobile App for MS patients you will find practical advice and information that may be beneficial to you. Note that syncing your iOS devices and making journal entries will require an internet connection which will use a minimal amount of your data plan.
Users can use this app to journal, flip through fact cards and even check the weather! Available on Apple and Android.
CareZone
The last app is not MS-specific, but incredibly useful for anyone managing a medical condition. CareZone is a secure, free service that makes it easier to stay organized and effective when caring for yourself, a parent, child, or someone in need. From your computer, smartphone or tablet you can safely organize files, contacts, insurance information, scan medications, and coordinate with family and other caregivers using a shared calendar and journal.
Patients, family members and caretakers can download this collaborative app for Apple and Android.
